4-0 out of 5 stars Complete Review
The I-870 from Nextel can be a tricky phone to get working. With that said once you get it working, it does a very good job of being a Phone, Camera, Video and MP3 player, all in one. As a phone it works great, compared to other cellular phones, it's a bit heavy but if your a nextel user your already use to that. As a camera, it is up to par with any other camera phone on the market, better than most models I tried. As a video player, again it's up to par with any other video/phone on the market. As far as the MP3 player goes, the sound is good for a phone/MP3 player but this is not an IPOD. Most reviews I read, users stated they had difficulty getting songs onto the phone. The micro SD card included with the unit can only hold 5 or 6 songs. You will probably want to get a bigger micro card, otherwise why even use the MP3 player. I would suggest a 512mb card that will hold 100 songs or more. Here is how I got my MP3's onto the phone. I tried the included software but got no where when I tried to load more than 10 songs onto my 512MB card and get them to play on the I-870. I did find some easy software that works, "DB Power AMP converter". First you must format the card inside your phone it will be an option in the menu on your phone under the media tab. Once you have downloaded the DB software to your computer, it will ask you to select the songs on disc or on your computer that you want converted. You then select all the songs you want to put onto your phone. Now that you have selected all your songs, you must make sure the file name (Artist and Song name) are no longer than 19 characters total(you will have to rename the tracks or artist titles to make them fit, otherwise they will not show up, or play on your I 870). Now convert them, with the following settings: MP3 Lame -> Bit rate 40KBps -> Frequency 16000 HZ -> output to your micro sd card -> convert. Once this process is complete, then take the micro SD card and put it in your phone, turn on your audio player and let the songs load. At this point your songs will all be on your phone and you will be able to play them. There is one problem here the songs were converted at very low speeds, so the quality sucks. To fix this go back and reformat the card inside your phone, it will erase all your files, which is needed. Now take the card out and put it back into your card reader, open up "DB Power Amp Converter" Take all the songs you previously converted and convert them again, this time use the following settings:MP3 Lame -> Bit rate 96KBps -> Frequency48000HZ -> output to your micro sd card -> convert. Take the card out and put it into your phone, select audio player, and all your songs will load and play with near CD quality. Don't ask me why you have to rename the files to make them 19 characters or less, and don't ask me why you have to convert all the files at a low quality/frequency load them to your phone, then re convert them at high quality/frequency, because I don't know, but it works. This process was a bit of a hassle for me, especially since I had to try a bunch of things to get this working, you just have to follow these instructions and you'll be up and running. Once I got the songs loaded, I play the audio player all the time, take alot of photos, use the video player, and talk on the phone daily with 0 problems.

2-0 out of 5 stars Seems rather problematic
Ok... first allow me to explain my situation.I just signed up for Nextel services 3 days ago and recieved my new phone the day after I signed up.At first everything was fine with it or so it seemed, it didn't pick up reception in my home but living in a generally rural area I thought that it was excuseable. When I talked to people on my phone my indicator said that I was recieving a full signal but they were having a hard time understanding what I was trying to say, it was as if it would only transfer half of what I was saying, rather frustrating to say the least. The next day, after reading the user reviews (should have done that before I bought the phone!!) I called Nextel to see if it was a problem with the phone. They instructed me to preform what is called a 3 finger test with this model while I was on a land line.Basically you hold down any 3 consecutive numbers while the phone is off and power it back on still holding down the numbers. It will take you to a diagnostics of sorts and the phone will test all of it's systems.I found out through that that the phone is truly faulty and am having a replacement sent this week.Unfortunately, since I had used the phone for over 30 minutes I couldn't get a different model, which I thought a little stupid since it's hard to discover a problem with your phone if you hadn't used it much. I have reserved hope that the new one will be better considering all the problems others have had with this phone later on down the road, mine had only been active for a day.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay away from this phone...
After 5 months, I could no longer connect to the Nextel service. Everything else on the phone worked. I called tech support and was told the problem was with the phone and I should take it in for service. The service center said the phone could not be repaired. I paid $179 for this piece of junk. This is the first and LAST Motorola product I'll ever buy. I've owned 4 other brands of cell phones and never had a problem with any of them.

1-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE
Before even having this phone for a year the outside of my flip went out and will no longer display the time or date,. The phone will power off whenever it feels like (including during calls), and sometimes will not turn on for up to 15 minutes regardless of if it has full battery life or not. At times when I am charging it, it will tell me I have an invalid battery, though the battery I am using is one that came with the phone originally. It also will register having an invalid charger on every one of the three Nextel chargers I have. When I contacted Motorola, I was told I would have to pay $50 dollars for pick up to send it in and be repaired and have the shutting off problem fixed, despite the fact that it is still under warranty. They also told me it would be an additional $170 dollars to fix my flip. I don't know why these problems have happened. I haven't even so much as dropped the phone. It has been very well taken care of, it is fairly expensive, and for some odd reason it couldn't even hold up for a year. All and all this phone has given me headaches everyday for the past few months and there is no way I will ever purchase a Motorola phone again. ... I can deal with the battery life being bad, but the problem I am having is bad.Seems that most of the time, if I answer a call, or open my phone to make a call, the phone powers down. Today for the first time, it actually did that in the middle of a call. I had called Motorola, and they said that this is a defect in many of the phones. 1-0 out of 5 stars i560 is JUNK - 3 Phones BROKE in only 3 Months!
I purchased 2 i560 phones - one for me and one for my husband.Brand new out of the box, 1 of them had a bad microphone (you could hear the person talking, but they couldn't hear you).Nextel & Motorolla wanted me to send the phone in for repair and be without it for 15 days - but I raised a stink and finally got it replaced (since it was broke from day 1, I didn't want a "serviced" phone).
1-0 out of 5 stars Rugged? NOT!
I bought this phone at the same time I bought the i870. I've dropped my i870 a couple of times and it's fine. My husband dropped the "rugged" phone once and the antenna, which sticks out like a thumb, snapped off.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just Not For Me
I've had this phone for over a year and a half and I've really never had a problem with it.The reception varies but it's generally pretty reliable. My whole family uses it for work because of the walkie-talkie feature.
3-0 out of 5 stars Decent phone, but very dated
I had the Nextel i730 for 8 months then i just couldnt take it anymore. To be honest the phone is a easy phone to get attached to. But recently i upgrade to the i850 and iam very very happy i did. The i730 is a phone / radio. The color screen is on par with all other free phones that are usually FREE. So basicly the screen is not impressive at all. The phone comes with features, but to be honest it took me about 2 months to figure out how to use all of them on,( NOT USER FRIENDLY AT ALL) and by that time i had lost faith in the phone itself. It's heavy, very heavy, and thick. On the good side, it' sorta stylish and its very durable, this is what i loved about it. I dropped the phone so many times and it has very little exterior damage. I look at this phone like, a army tank, versus my newer i850 which i just upgraded to, and thats more like a convertable BMW. The i850 is a phone that you just have to have a leather case on it, because it looks so good, that you dont wanna risk it gettings scratched, this on the other hand, there's no need to case it, because the exterior is that solid. I'm a 23 year old male out of atlanta ga. As far as reception, the calls on the i730 are very clear, the speaker phone is awesome, you can almost set the phone in one room and talk at a leisure tone on the other side of the room and the caller will hear you fine, which is cool. But to be honest i can only say this phone would fit someone who is not looking for alot bells and whistles, Not a person between the ages of 16-21, bad idea. This phone is for people who want a phone that can handle just about anything, ie construction worker. Another good thing about this phone is it'is nearly impossible to lose, due to its weight. When you have the i730 on the hip swivle thing, it feels like you've got a gun on ur hip, or a flash light, its that heavy. Plus with it being 2006 and all, this phone is getting very dated, by the end of the year this phone is going to be classified as a dinosaur. If you can get it for free, go for it, but if your paying money, trust me, dish out a few extra bucks and go with the i850, the i850 is the honest to god best cell phone ive ever owned, and ive had 15+ cells.

1-0 out of 5 stars Two cans and some string?
Throughout my ownership of 2 different handsets, both model i730 (t), I would constantly be aggravated by the slow response of the phone. Everything from making phone calls, to sending a text message, to checking the sports scores or weather, is run from a Java program. This means that sending of commands from the buttons to the application is extremely delayed. This delay only gets worse as the day goes on, and I am usually forced to restart the phone 2 or 3 times a day.

3-0 out of 5 stars Seems to be OK but ugly
When I read other customers' reviews I got quite upset. I've got the phone 3 days ago, and haven't learned all of it's features, but it seems to hold the charge pretty well so far, in fact much better than my previous Samsung e315. I do not like the fact that there is no external screen, but I think I can live with it. What I really like about the plan is free in network direct connect (walkie-talkie) calls and free roaming in Canada. We have unlimited local direct connect, which means we can connect for free in our local area, which includes upstate NY and VT. Nationwide direct-conect is 10c/min, but as they explained to me it's charged per second, i.e. if you talk 10 seconds you are charged for 10 seconds, not for 1 min. I kind of don't like the fact that direct-connect apparently is done through a different network or something like that, and for direct-connect you need to dial a number that is different from the phone number - it makes the amount of numbers to remember double, it would be more convenient to just make unlimited in-network calling like Sprint does. Anyway, this is still good because most calls that we do are between family members and we do travel. The only major problem with this phone is that I think it's really ugly, especially compared to the old samsung, however, I like the fact that it's bigger and heavier than my old phone, because I can more easily press it between my cheek and shoulder and talk on it while doing something else with my both hands - it's kind of important when you take care of your small kid and try to talk to your mom at the same time. The ring-tones that come with the phone are quite horrible, there was only one that I didn't particularly dislike, but I won't bother downloading anything, it's a phone after all, not a music player. The only problem is we have two identical phones, with the same ring-tone. :))) I can not deny that the problems with batteries and bad reception in West coast/FL that other customers mentioned got me a bit upset and I'm thinking wether I should return it and look for a better phone/plan, I wouldn't care about style or functionality flaws as much, but I do care about sturdiness and reliability. As for the plan, Nextel seems to be the only company who offers free phones with a 1 year contract and free roaming in Canada which is not entirely without a catch, because long-distance charges apply when you call from Canada. T-mobile does offer 1 year contract as well, but we just cancelled our account with them, and frankly speaking reception was very bad in our area.
1-0 out of 5 stars Piece of junk!
If I could give it a 0, I would.Doesn't hold a charge for more than 24 hours, sometimes less!A friend of mine has the same phone and exact same problem.Don't bother trying to save your battery life by turning it off.Nope!Turn it off with half a bar, turn it back on beeping because the stupid think is LOW to NO BAR!Reception is great for me, but what good is that if the thing is dead most of the time? Are you trying to conduct any kind of business?Do you need a cell phone to make phone calls?Well... this may not be the phone for you.Contract. Contract. Contract.Don't do it.BIG mistake...I can go on, but I won't.Piece of junk!

"hi,im a satisfied costumer for the motorola i760 phone. Before all i had was a phone booth, but now that i got this phone no booth for me and evryone is sayen they want one too so im helpen.thanks for the phone.=)

2-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
I got rid of the bulky i355s at the end of our contract and bought two of these for our account. We had to return the first phone (line1) within days of getting it as it would randomly shut off (crash), and other times the volume would fluctuate on its own.Exchanging it was an ordeal with Sprint - they charged me for the replacement phone and still haven't credited my account after two billing cycles.A few months later and now the second phone (line2) is crashing.I'll make a call and hang up - and it shuts off.Other times it will shut off in the middle of the call. The other night I went to charge it and it said invalid battery - so I took the battery out and put it back in.Then it said "invalid charger."I might go back to the i355, it was rugged, reliable (but large) phone.I guess I'll have to haggle with Motorola about getting this one fixed/replaced.

4-0 out of 5 stars secondhand review of this phone
my husband uses this phone for work and it has one of the funniest ringtones i've ever heard. i don't know what it's called but it has an upbeat techno rhythm to it. the walkie talkie feature is very useful as everyone in his business network uses it all the time, including him. it's great for a business that has many locations. i only give this product four stars because i haven't tried it myself so i don't know all the features. but i hope the review i've provided helps! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I love the phone and service!
I love my Nextel i530.Purchased it almost a year ago now.I am in northern Ohio and travel many places around the state. No matter where I have gone, and I take my phone everywhere with me, I have yet to find a place where my phone doesn't have Nextel service. Also, very durable phone.I live on a farm here, and we use the two-way often to communicate. My phone in particular has been dropped several times, once off a grain bin onto concrete 35 feet below, and once also driven over by four wheeler in mud.Still works like new.I am extremely happy with Nextel's service and phones.I know several other people with different model Nextel phones and also can't complain.I would definitely recommend Nextel over Verizon, Alltel, Cingular, and Sprint.Other companies have such cheap phones it seems. It's a shame that Sprint and Nextel merged - from my experience with Sprint, they are terrible with no service anywhere, and their phones suck too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dependable and Durable
I have used the i530 for a little over two years and have had no problems with the unit, or with NEXTEL's service. To simplify your reading, here is a list of pros and cons.

1-0 out of 5 stars Warranty? What warranty?
I had been very happy with my Motorola phone until the battery started losing its charge within a day, even when the phone was turned off. The friendly but incompetent customer support kept me on the phone for an average of 40 minutes for the repeated calls trying to figure out the problem. After the phone had finally been sent to their technical service center, they returned it to me that the phone was irreperable "due to customer abuse." I have done nothing to that phone that could have caused any damage (unless using it to make phone calls counts as "customer abuse"), but got the same comment, without explanation after I had sent the phone in for a second time for reevaluation. It seems that Motorola is just trying to get out of fixing or replacing the phone free of charge under warranty. You'll be fine with a Motorola phone as long as it works. After that, you're on your own.

3-0 out of 5 stars DOES NOT HAVE "DIRECT TALK", only "Direct Connect"
You should know that the description Amazon offers regarding the features for the i605 is incorrect in that the i605 only has the Direct Connect function (walkie-talkie-like service through the wireless phone network) but DOES NOT have the Direct Talk function (true walkie-talkie service direct handset to handset, even in areas where there is no Nextel signal).

4-0 out of 5 stars Why can't they make it for Cingular?!?!
For those who need a phone that will survive the elements and everyday wear and tear, this is your phone.Building for military standards is great.Cingular's Motorola V557 gets dents and dings on it if you make a mean face at it.Why can't Motorola make the i355, or at least a phone built to the same tough standards, for Cingular?

1-0 out of 5 stars Run away from this phone & Nextel
I had 3 different i836's and all had the same problems. The phone looks great but it ends there. The battery life is short & the signal sucks - I went from an i205 that I had for 5 years - to the 836 which cut off 36% of my calls (according to Nextel's own records) - this phone is the worst phone I ever used - it goes from full signal (5 bars) to no service all day long - just back and forth. I use about 6000 minutes a month and I need a dependable phone and service provider.I wasted hours and hours arguing with Nextel and got nowhere. After 2 months of torture I cancelled my service with Sprint / Nextelthey charged me $200 temination fee and refused to allow me to return the $100 i836.I went into Verizon, got a Kyocera phone and it works great. I'm paying more for my monthly service, but it just works - with no hassles. The i836 is now a $300 paperweight. I would rather stick needles in my eyes then deal with Sprint / Nextel again. What a way to treat a 9 year loyal customer Nextel.Way to go.......

2-0 out of 5 stars I want my money back
For looks it is a nice phone, for everyday use... Dont waste your money. Not good signal, terrible sound on the speaker and very delicate to most regular use. I used for a long time the i90c... I miss it even though it was a bigger phone. I would not recomend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice Looking Piece Of Junk!
This phone is awful, I upgraded because my i80 (?) an old nextel brick was just too big and it snapped in half. this phone is the smalles they make right now. It has horrible battery l;ife, I am on my second battery because it will just cut out without warning when I am on the phone and have barely used it after a full charge. the signal is terrible, I don't have reception in places that I did with my older phone. the case scratches and chips easily and it just doesn't work!! If I paid for the phone I would have given it up long ago, but I use it for work heavily, dc and phone - when the battery is charged it does work fine. Another annoying thing is the volume buttons on the outside of the phone are easily pressed if the phone is in your pocket and will take itself off of vibrate without you knowing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad battery life
My wife has had this phone for about two years. Loved it at first but soon after she began charging it more and more frequently. Right now she is charging it 2-3 times per day and she doesn't use it often. Her favorite aspect of the phone is its size.

1-0 out of 5 stars It's Not the Service, It's the Phone
I owned this phone for a whopping 10 days before I got fed up and traded it in for the i860. It's a cute phone -- I loved the bronze color and the lightweight feel -- but for God's sake, if I wanted to take a week to get a text message through, I'd write a letter.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't go buy it!
I paid $150 extra plus tax to get a cool looking phone and it was not worth it.I went to the Nextel Support Center near my work to check if there was anything they could do -- nope -- the guy showed me a wall with the discontinued phones and this was the first one displayed. He said that was probably the worst cell phone ever released and everyone is having problems. I bought the service plan and he advised me to call and explain the problems I am having in an attempt to get a new cell phone. Common problems include: call gets dropped, from full bar to no service, and no service in key locations such as my work, my drive to work, and home. BTW, I have other people at work that have nextel service and it works fine so it is definetely my cell phone and not the nextel service.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nextel is most expensive service with the worst reception/service
Nextel has bad reception in Northeast USA. Not sure about the rest of the country. Also, Nextel has the highest price among all the other service providers. They add $24 additional surcharges and hidden cost on top of you monthly fee. Other carrier have approximately $10 additional charge. Nextel charge you more and you get less. Also, they have poor customer service with no compensation for you dropped calls or no service at all.

1-0 out of 5 stars WARNING
My problems with nextel did not stop when I canceled my service. I will get to the problems with the service. When I went to get a new phone a day before my contract expired, I of course wanted to keep my number. So as I went to get my Cingular phone (highly recommended), I had the old number switched to my new number. Today, I get in the mail my nextel statement for the month with a $200 early termination even though I had not canceled my service, but had simply got a new phone and switched my number over. This was on icing on the cake after 2 years of absolutely amazingy bad service from nextel. In my town, not a small town by any means, there are very few places that have any service. In the largest subdivision, you cannot get service anywhere. I constantly get comments from people trying to reach me that get the classic nextel line...Please hold while the nextel subscriber you are trying to reach is located. Most of the time I would not even recieve incoming calls, calls would go straight to my voice mail. Not only would I not get the calls, but often I would not even get the voice mails until days or even weeks later. When I did actually take calls (and call out), I cannot count the number of times I've had my call dropped. I recieved so many different error messages sometimes I wonder if they just spend all their time at nextel thinking of different error messages to program into their phones. That brings me to the selling point of nextel, the famed and well-loved direct connect feature. This is an absolute joke. Direct connect only works MAYBE half the time I tried to use it. Even then, in the middle of the conversation I would be greeted by the loud beep of my phone telling me I wont be talking to that person anymore. Of course, I would expect nothing less from the nextel network. Text messaging with nextel is next to impossible. If it did not take hours to send or recieve a message, it took days, or maybe didn't even come at all. The internet access was fine, it the rare instance that it worked. Of course, when you don't have service, you don't get the internet access either. I was constantly getting the message "network not available". Calling and trying to complain to nextel is futile. Trying to get through to customer service takes forever and once you get through they do nothing. My experience with nextel has been nothing short of a disaster and I write this trying to warn anyone considering nextel. Stick with Verizon or Cingular and you will be much happier in the end. Don't make the same mistake I did.

DO NOT let Mr. Hugh's comments above influence your decision about Nextel. He evidently didn't do his homework before he purchased the phone. Ever complaint he had could be had with any phone company if they didn't have service in your area. Nextel can't help it if he lives in some God-forsaken place out in no-where.

I upgraded to this phone from the i205.So far I am happy overall with the phone itself, but some of the "extras" are annoying. The Sleep Mode, where the screen goes dark, bugs me to no end.I keep thinking my phone is off, when it is not.And you can't attach a picture to a persons name in your phone so that it pops up when they call (unless I just haven't discovered how to do it.I read the manual cover to cover). The camera takes nice pics (haven't figured out how to zoom in, if I can). The non standatd ringtones that come with the phone (3 of em) are ok.2 are not quite loud enough (but very cool) and the 3rd is just really loud.I like the "Disco Lights", it catches your attention if you don't hear the ring.Music sound quality is very good, if you like music ringtones.Navigaiting the menus took a little getting used to, but I am getting to like it.You can personalize each button, which I thought was neat.At first, when I talked on the phone, it sounded like people were at the end of a tunnel.I think that is a result of digitizing the signal. You get used to it quickly. The screen is bright (except when in bright sunlight) and you can change the palatte colors. The games, Tetris and Bowling are pretty good, but Tetris is demo only. The standard battery doesn't last quite as long as expected.I had to recharge it the first day after the inital 12 hour charge.New toy, had to play with it!It does seem to get used up pretty quickly, but the phone is doing a lot of stuff, even when it is just sitting there.I would recommend getting the more powerful battery available for this phone if you use it a lot everyday. For me, it is fine to charge every couple of days or so.I don't make a ton of calls.I like it and am glad I upgraded.
2-0 out of 5 stars Warranty?

5-0 out of 5 stars No competition
DO NOT let Mr. Hugh's comments above influence your decision about Nextel. He evidently didn't do his homework before he purchased the phone. Ever complaint he had could be had with any phone company if they didn't have service in your area. Nextel can't help it if he lives in some God-forsaken place out in no-where.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Small Phone Choice for Nextel Customers
I'm surprised by all the bad reviews and that is why I am bothering to write one.I have had this phone for 2 years and purchased the same phone for my mother and sister.Since we are on the Nextel plan for business we were somewhat limited and picked this one because of it's size.I will admit it is terrible for text messaging compared to some of the other phones out there. And it's not built to browse the web etc.But we just wanted a phone not a sidekick or a blackberry.I have had no problems with battery life or pieces falling out or overheating.I'm sure the other reviewers aren't lying, and as Nextel stopped making this phone maybe the model was prone to certain problems but as for the three phones I purchased, none of them had problems with parts, reception or anything else.If you want a small phone for Nextel, I think it's the best way to go.

2-0 out of 5 stars Phone has lots of problems
Have had this phone for a year, the screen to the earpiece fell out. This happened to a co-worker too but Nextel would not fix it without a hefty price. The battery won't keep a charge after a year either. The size and design is good but the problems need to be fixed.

1-0 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE, PLEASE BELIEVE THE BAD REVIEWS
I don't honestly care if this review is helpful or not, but I must stress out the fact that the bad reviews for this phone are definitely true. Bad battery life, bad reception (or NO reception), awful design, small but not exactly to its advantage (too small of buttons - no I don't have fat hands) So yeah, don't get this phone. ...
